Grad student wins grant to pursue microbiology research

Ryan Roy, a graduate student in the UIS Biology Department, has received an award from the highly competitive Sigma Xi Grants-In-Aid of Research program. Roy's award will allow her to embark on a novel investigation involving the simulation of natural chemical conditions (specifically oxidation-reduction, or "redox") in the laboratory to assess parts of the microbial community that may be enriched under different conditions.

Her adviser, Mike Lemke, associate professor of Biology and director of the Emiquon Field Station, said the results of Roy's work could have implications for wider research in the field. Read more>>
