History Club to present "Road to Brown"

“The Road to Brown,” a documentary about the legal strategy employed by the NAACP in its efforts to desegregate schools, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 10, in Brookens Auditorium, lower level of Brookens Library at UIS. Auditions set for spring production

The Theatre Program at UIS will hold open auditions for its spring production, the comedy-drama Fifth of July by Lanford Wilson, at 7 p.m. Sunday, February 13, and Monday, February 14, in the Studio Theatre, located on PAC level one. Auditions for eight roles – four men and four women – are open to anyone, with or without experience. Read more>>

UIS, UPI Local 4100 reach agreement on salary increase

The University of Illinois at Springfield and the University Professionals of Illinois Local 4100 have reached agreement on a one-year contract that includes a salary increase of 3.1% for all bargaining unit members. The agreement is retroactive to August 29, 2004. Read more>>

UIS to take part in national "Read-In"

Students, faculty, and staff from UIS will join over a million readers from across the nation in the 16th Annual African American Read-In on Monday, February 7. That day, members of the UIS community will visit six area elementary schools to read to assemblies of students.

The event, sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English and the NCTE in observance of Black History Month, is designed to celebrate black writers and their contributions to literature. This year, UIS has chosen to read the works of Virginia Hamilton. Read more>>

UIS expands opportunities for study abroad

The Global Experience Program at UIS has expanded its opportunities for study abroad with the addition of two new international exchange programs. Chancellor Ringeisen signed official agreements with Veritas, a social service agency based in Romania, and with Charles Darwin University in Australia at a ceremony held Thursday afternoon, January 27. This brings the number of international institutions with which UIS has formal affiliations to five.

This summer, students and area residents also have the opportunity to study abroad in six different two- to three-week courses. Read more>>

Center for Entrepreneurship to be established at UIS

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IDCEO) announced today a partnership to establish a Center for Entrepreneurship that will be housed in the College of Business and Management at UIS. Some of the details regarding the partnership must still go through formal processes at UIS before the center is fully implemented.

Ron McNeil, dean of the College of Business and Management, said the plan is for the center to foster business creation in the trade industry, assist regional business leaders, and support and mentor new entrepreneurs. Read more>>

Discovery Channel show highlights work of Innocence Project

On Saturday, January 29, at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. the Discovery Channel will air “Reasonable Doubt: Guilty or Innocent” on the murder case of Karyn Slover of Decatur. Slover’s ex-husband and his parents were convicted in May 2002 of the murder and are serving long terms in Illinois prisons.

The Downstate Illinois Innocence Project, affiliated with the Institute for Legal and Policy Studies at UIS, working through Director of Investigations Bill Clutter, is assisting the Illinois Office of the State Applellate Defender in investigating the Slovers’ claims of innocence. Read more>>

"Harriet Tubman" to appear at UIS

Kathryn Harris will portray slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman in a program set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, in the PAC Studio Theatre. The event and a reception immediately following are presented by Friends of Brookens Library and are free and open to the public.

As a conductor on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War, Tubman made 19 trips into the South and helped more than 300 slaves – including her own parents -- escape to the North. Read more>>

Music and Computers workshop

The UIS music program will host a six-week workshop on computer music applications that is open to "anyone who is musical" on campus or in the community. Scheduled for February 9 through March 16, the workshop will meet Wednesdays from 6 until 9 p.m. in HSB 208. The focus will be on some of the new plug and play MIDI and audio software. Sessions will include demonstration and hands-on practice. Read more>>

University Scholars Lecture: "The New World of Asia"

Dr. Antoinette Burton, professor of History at UIUC, will speak on “The New World of Asia: Images of Cold War Cosmopolitanism in Holiday Magazine,” at noon on Friday, January 28, in PAC conference room G. The Vagina Monologues to be presented at UIS

The UIS Women’s Issues Caucus will host a production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play The Vagina Monologues at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 5, in the Studio Theatre. The event is presented as part of the V-Day 2005 Campaign, a global movement designed to raise money and awareness for organizations that work to stop violence against women and girls. All proceeds will be used locally.

This production will be produced, directed, and performed entirely by UIS students.

Jim Kasper is 22nd Employee of the Year

Jim Kasper was named 2004 Employee of the Year at the 22nd annual Employee of the Year Recognition Ceremony, held January 11. Kasper, an electrician, was selected from among 11 UIS staff members who had been employees of the month during the past year. He was employee of the month for March. Read more>>

Richard A. Bradley has been named interim general manager of public radio station WUIS/WIPA, effective January 1.  Bradley takes over from Brad Swanson, who retired December 31 after more than 27 years with the station. Read more >>

“Eight Board Feet” next at Visual Arts Gallery

“Eight Board Feet,” an exhibit of paintings by Marina Mangubi, will be on display from January 13 through February 10 at the Visual Arts Gallery. Painting landscapes of Oregon and Ohio reminiscent of the Northern Baroque tradition, Mangubi uses 8-foot long two-by-fours as her medium, noting that they provide “just the right picture plane for the flat, sprawling landscape.” Read more >>

Discussion on same-sex families to be presented

“Leave No Family Behind,” a community-based discussion on issues involved in marriage equality, same-sex marriage, and the everyday obstacles faced by gay male and lesbian families, will be presented from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, January 19. Read more >>

Public invited to join music groups

Members of the community who are interested in sharing their musical talents are invited to join one or more of the five campus ensembles currently gearing up for the spring semester.
